Poson Full Moon Day (Online Session)
June 7, 2020 (Sunday)
Lankarama Buddhist Institute
What is Poson Fullmoon Day?Arahanta Mahinda Thero along with 5 more monks visited Sri Lanka in the 3rd BC following the 3rd Buddhist Council held in India under the patronage of King Ashoka. Venerable Mahinda also invited his sister Arahanta Theri Sanghamitta to visit Sri Lanka along with a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree in Buddhagaya. They are both king Ashoka's children and they both stayed the rest of their lives promoting and establishing Buddhism in the island nation which became the Theravada Headquarters eventually. Thera Mahinda is therefore called Anubuddha Mahinda due to his enormous service to the Buddha sasana in Sri Lanka. Poson Full Moon day is dedicated to him and Sri Lankans have been celebrating this full moon day in style ever since by practicing Dana, Sila and Bhavana all across the island nation.
