Dhammadayada Sutta

3. Discourse on Heirs of Dhamma

Evaṃ me sutaṃ—   ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

Thus have I heard:
One time the Lord was staying near Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. While he was there the Lord addressed the monks, saying:
“Monks.”
“Revered One,” these monks answered the Lord in assent. The Lord spoke thus:
Dhammadāyādā me, bhikkhave, bhavatha, mā āmisadāyādā. Atthi me tumhesu anukampā: ‘kinti me sāvakā dhammadāyādā bhaveyyuṃ, no āmisadāyādā’ti. Tumhe ca me, bhikkhave, āmisadāyādā bhaveyyātha no dhammadāyādā, tumhepi tena ādiyā bhaveyyātha: ‘āmisadāyādā satthusāvakā viharanti, no dhammadāyādā’ti; ahampi tena ādiyo bhaveyyaṃ: ‘āmisadāyādā satthusāvakā viharanti, no dhammadāyādā’ti. Tumhe ca me, bhikkhave, dhammadāyādā bhaveyyātha, no āmisadāyādā, tumhepi tena na ādiyā bhaveyyātha: ‘dhammadāyādā satthusāvakā viharanti, no āmisadāyādā’ti; ahampi tena na ādiyo bhaveyyaṃ: ‘dhammadāyādā satthusāvakā viharanti, no āmisadāyādā’ti. Tasmātiha me, bhikkhave, dhammadāyādā bhavatha, mā āmisadāyādā. Atthi me tumhesu anukampā: ‘kinti me sāvakā dhammadāyādā bhaveyyuṃ, no āmisadāyādā’ti.
“Monks, become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things. I have sympathy with you and think: How may disciples become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things? If you, monks, should become heirs of material things, not heirs of Dhamma, not only may you become in consequence those of whom it is said: ‘The Teacher's disciples are heirs of material things, not heirs of Dhamma,’ but I too may become in consequence one of whom it is said: ‘The Teacher's disciples are heirs of material things, not heirs of Dhamma,’ But if you, monks, should become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things, then you may become in consequence those of whom it is said: ‘The Teacher's disciples are heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things,’ and I too may become in consequence one of whom it is said: ‘The Teacher's disciples are heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things,’ Therefore, monks, become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things.

Idhāhaṃ, bhikkhave, bhuttāvī assaṃ pavārito paripuṇṇo pariyosito suhito yāvadattho; siyā ca me piṇḍapāto atirekadhammo chaḍḍanīyadhammo. Atha dve bhikkhū āgaccheyyuṃ jighacchādubbalyaparetā. Tyāhaṃ evaṃ vadeyyaṃ: ‘ahaṃ khomhi, bhikkhave, bhuttāvī pavārito paripuṇṇo pariyosito suhito yāvadattho; atthi ca me ayaṃ piṇḍapāto atirekadhammo chaḍḍanīyadhammo. Sace ākaṅkhatha, bhuñjatha, no ce tumhe bhuñjissatha, idānāhaṃ appaharite vā chaḍḍessāmi, appāṇake vā udake opilāpessāmī’ti.
I have sympathy with you and think: How may disciples become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things? Take a case where I, monks, may have eaten and be satisfied, (the meal) ended, finished, I having had enough, as much as I pleased. But it may be that some of my alms-food is over and is to be thrown away, when two monks may arrive worn out with exhaustion and hunger. If I should speak to them thus: ‘I, monks, have eaten and am satisfied (the meal) ended, finished, I having had enough, as much as I pleased. But some of my alms-food is over and is to be thrown away. Do eat it if you (so) desire; if you do not eat it I will now throw it away where there is no grass or I will drop it into water that has no living creatures in it.’
Tatrekassa bhikkhuno evamassa: ‘bhagavā kho bhuttāvī pavārito paripuṇṇo pariyosito suhito yāvadattho; atthi cāyaṃ bhagavato piṇḍapāto atirekadhammo chaḍḍanīyadhammo. Sace mayaṃ na bhuñjissāma, idāni bhagavā appaharite vā chaḍḍessati, appāṇake vā udake opilāpessati. Vuttaṃ kho panetaṃ bhagavatā: “dhammadāyādā me, bhikkhave, bhavatha, mā āmisadāyādā”ti. Āmisaññataraṃ kho panetaṃ, yadidaṃ piṇḍapāto. Yannūnāhaṃ imaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ abhuñjitvā imināva jighacchādubbalyena evaṃ imaṃ rattindivaṃvītināmeyyan’ti. So taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ abhuñjitvā teneva jighacchādubbalyena evaṃ taṃ rattindivaṃ vītināmeyya.
Then it may occur to one monk: ‘Now, the Lord having eaten and being satisfied (the meal) ended, finished, having had enough, as much as he pleased. But this alms-food of the Lord's is to be thrown away; if we do not eat it, the Lord will now throw it away where there is no grass or he will drop it into water that has no living creatures in it. But this was said by the Lord: Monks, become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things. But this is a material thing, that is to say, alms-food. Suppose that I, not having eaten this alms-food, in spite of this hunger and exhaustion, should pass this night and day thus?’ He, not having eaten that alms-food, in spite of that hunger and exhaustion, may pass this night and day thus.
Atha dutiyassa bhikkhuno evamassa: ‘bhagavā kho bhuttāvī pavārito paripuṇṇo pariyosito suhito yāvadattho; atthi cāyaṃ bhagavato piṇḍapāto atirekadhammo chaḍḍanīyadhammo. Sace mayaṃ na bhuñjissāma, idāni bhagavā appaharite vā chaḍḍessati, appāṇake vā udake opilāpessati. Yannūnāhaṃ imaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuñjitvā jighacchādubbalyaṃ paṭivinodetvāevaṃ imaṃ rattindivaṃ vītināmeyyan’ti. So taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuñjitvā jighacchādubbalyaṃ paṭivinodetvā evaṃ taṃ rattindivaṃ vītināmeyya.
Then it occurs to the second monk, thus: ‘Now, the Lord having eaten and being satisfied (the meal) ended, finished, having had enough, as much as he pleased. But this alms-food of the Lord's is to be thrown away; if we do not eat it, the Lord will now throw it away where there is no grass or he will drop it into water that has no living creatures in it. Suppose that I, having eaten this alms-food, having driven away this hunger and exhaustion, should pass this night and day thus? He, having eaten that alms-food, having driven away that hunger and exhaustion, may spend that night and day thus.

Kiñcāpi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuñjitvā jighacchādubbalyaṃ paṭivinodetvā evaṃ taṃ rattindivaṃ vītināmeyya, atha kho asuyeva me purimo bhikkhu pujjataro ca pāsaṃsataro ca. Taṃ kissa hetu? Tañhi tassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno dīgharattaṃ appicchatāya santuṭṭhiyā sallekhāya subharatāya vīriyārambhāya saṃvattissati. Tasmātiha me, bhikkhave, dhammadāyādā bhavatha, mā āmisadāyādā. Atthi me tumhesu anukampā: ‘kinti me sāvakā dhammadāyādā bhaveyyuṃ, no āmisadāyādā’”ti.
Although, monks, that monk, having eaten that alms-food, having driven away this hunger and exhaustion, should pass this night and day thus, he, having eaten that alms-food, having driven away that hunger and exhaustion, may spend that night and day thus, yet that first monk is for me the more to be honoured and the more to be praised. What is the reason for this? It is, monks, that it will conduce for a long time to that monk's desirelessness, to his contentment, expunging (of evil), to his being easily supported, to his putting forth energy. Therefore, monks, become my heirs of Dhamma, not heirs of material things. I have sympathy with you and think: How may disciples become my heirs of Dhamma, and not heirs of material things?”

Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṃ vatvāna
 sugato uṭṭhāyāsanā vihāraṃ pāvisi.
Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto acirapakkantassa bhagavato bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti. “Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṃ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:
Thus spoke the Lord; when the Well-farer had spoken thus, rising from his seat, he entered the dwelling-place. Thereupon the venerable Sāriputta, not long after the Lord had gone away, addressed the monks, saying:
“Reverend monks.”
“Your reverence,” these monks answered the venerable Sāriputta in assent. Then the venerable Sāriputta spoke thus:

“Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekaṃ nānusikkhanti, kittāvatā ca pana satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekamanusikkhantī”ti? “Dūratopi kho mayaṃ, āvuso, āgacchāma āyasmato sāriputtassa santike etassa bhāsitassa atthamaññātuṃ. Sādhu vatāyasmantaṃyeva sāriputtaṃ paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho; āyasmato sāriputtassa sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī”ti. “Tena hāvuso, suṇātha, sādhukaṃ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti. “Evamāvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṃ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:
“In what respects, your reverences, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, do disciples not follow his example of aloofness? And in what respects, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, do disciples follow his example of aloofness?”
“We would come even from afar to learn from the venerable Sāriputta the meaning of this that is said. It were good indeed if the meaning of this that is said should be spoken out by the venerable Sāriputta, so that monks, having heard the venerable Sāriputta, might master it.”
“Very well, your reverences, listen, attend carefully, and I will speak.”
“Yes, your reverence,” these monks answered the venerable Sāriputta in assent. Then the venerable Sāriputta spoke thus:

“Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekaṃ nānusikkhanti? Idhāvuso, satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekaṃ nānusikkhanti, yesañca dhammānaṃ satthā pahānamāha, te ca dhamme nappajahanti, bāhulikā ca honti, sāthalikā, okkamane pubbaṅgamā, paviveke nikkhittadhurā. Therā, āvuso, bhikkhū imehi tīhi ṭhānehi gārayhā bhavanti. Tatrāvuso, majjhimā bhikkhū … pe … navā bhikkhū tīhi ṭhānehi gārayhā bhavanti. ‘Satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekaṃ nānusikkhantī’ti—iminā paṭhamena ṭhānena navā bhikkhū gārayhā bhavanti. ‘Yesañca dhammānaṃ satthā pahānamāha te ca dhamme nappajahantī’ti—iminā dutiyena ṭhānena navā bhikkhū gārayhā bhavanti. ‘Bāhulikā ca honti, sāthalikā, okkamane pubbaṅgamā, paviveke nikkhittadhurā’ti—iminā tatiyena ṭhānena navā bhikkhū gārayhā bhavanti. Navā, āvuso, bhikkhū imehi tīhi ṭhānehi gārayhā bhavanti. Ettāvatā kho, āvuso, satthu pavivittassa viharato sāvakā vivekaṃ nānusikkhanti.
“This is a case, your reverences, where, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, disciples do not follow his example as to aloofness, they do not get rid of those things of which the Teacher has spoken of getting rid, they are ones for abundance and are lax, taking the lead in backsliding, throwing off the yoke of seclusion.
Among them, your reverences, monks who are elders become contemptible in three ways:
(1) If, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, disciples do not follow his example as to aloofness, this is the first way in which monks who are elders become contemptible.
(2) If they do not get rid of those things of which the Teacher has spoken of getting rid, this is the second way in which monks who are elders become contemptible.
(3) If they are ones for abundance and are lax, taking the lead in backsliding, throwing off the yoke of seclusion, this is the third way in which monks who are elders become contemptible.
So, your reverences, monks who are elders become contemptible in these three ways.

But in what respects, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, do disciples follow his example as to aloofness?
This is a case, your reverences, where, while the Teacher is staying in seclusion, disciples follow his example as to aloofness and get rid of those things of which the Teacher has spoken of getting rid, they are not ones for abundance, they are not lax, they throw off the yoke of backsliding and take the lead in seclusion.

English Text:
I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One lived in Gosita's monastery in Kosambi. At that time the wandering ascetic Sandaka lived in a grove of fig trees with a large community of wandering ascetics about five hundred of them. Then venerable Ānanda, getting up from his seclusion in the evening addressed the bhikkhus: `Friends, let us go to the Devakata pool to see the caves,' Those bhikkhus agreed and venerable Ānanda approached the Devakata pool with those bhikkhus. At that time, the wandering ascetic Sandaka was seated with a large gathering of wandering ascetics making much noise engaged in various kinds of childish talk. Such as talk about kings, robbers, chief ministers, the army, about fears, fights, eatables and drinks, dress, beds, flowers and scents, relations, conveyances, villages, hamlets, towns and states, women and heros, and gossip at the corner of the street and at the well, about those dead and gone, various other talk about the origin of the world and the oceanandof things thathappenedand did not happen. The wandering ascetic Sandaka saw venerable Ānanda coming in the distance and silenced the gathering: `Good sirs, make less noise, do not make such a noise. The recluse Ānanda, a disciple of the recluse Gotama is coming. Of the disciples of recluse Gotama, residing in Kosambi this is one. These venerable ones make little noise, are trained to make little noise and they train others to make little noise. Thinking this gathering makes little noise may have thought to approach,' Then those wandering ascetics became silent Venerable Ānanda approached the wandering ascetic, Sandaka. The wandering ascetic Sandaka said to venerable Ānanda: `Good Ānanda, come! It is after a long time that good Ānanda thought of coming. Sit good Ānanda, the seat is ready,' Venerable Ānanda sat on the prepared seat, and the wandering ascetic too sat on a side taking a low seat.

Venerable Aluthnuwara Sumanatissa Nayaka Thero
To be conferred as the
Chief Sangha Nayaka of North America

Having hailed from an enchanting locality called Aluthnuwara in Balangoda amidst the exquisite hill tracks of Ratnapura district, our protagonist entered the holy Buddhist Order on June 13, 1964, with the Dhamma name Aluthnuwara Sumanatissa and he became a full-fledged bhikkhu in July 1978. From May 1978, onward he started teaching as a Dhamma teacher in a number of public schools. Venerable Sumanatissa visited United States in 1991 and established Lankarama Buddhist Institute in La Puente, California. As of today, Lankarama Buddhist Institute has become one of the most active Buddhist temples serving all the communities in California.

Sumanatissa Thero has been rendering a yeomen’s service to the Buddhist communities both in Sri Lanka and US. His wonderful contribution towards the Buddhist community in Sri Lanka is highlighted by the current progress at Vijayasiriwardenaramaya, Arawwala and Gangatilaka Viharaya, Iyamporuwa, Kotte. Today, many thousands of Buddhist devotees are benefited immensely through these two charming Buddhist temples alone. Gangatilaka Viharaya which is located just next to the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Parliament complex, plays a very vital role as a busy Buddhist temple all throughout the year. Thanks to Sumanatissa Thero’s development drive both Gangatilaka Viharaya and Vijayasiriwardenaramaya are now fully operational with a variety of organized Dhamma events. Our Thero was able to manage all the temples both in California and in Sri Lanka due to his great leadership qualities and management skills.

Venerable Thero continued to serve the community through a wide variety of social welfare and charity activities. One of the distinguished contributions by Sumanatissa Thero and his trusted devotees was the building of 50 new houses to Tsunami victims at Nelumpokunagama, Maha Induruwa in southern Sri Lanka. Through Lankarama Vision Foundation, Venerable Sumanatissa and his devotees were able to benefit thousands of underprivileged citizens by way of cataract surgeries and reading glasses. Thero has refurbished two Buddhist temples in his hometown and donated Buddha statues while the local school at his hometown was offered a serene shrine room. Meanwhile hundreds of innocent children have been provided scholarships so far to continue their school education besides wheelchairs and other equipment were provided to a number of handicapped and needy people in Sri Lanka.
In recognizing Venerable Aluthnuwara Sumanatissa Maha Thero’s noble Dhamma service and social welfare drive over the last several decades, Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha has decided to confer a special honorary title “Chief Sangha Nayaka of North America”. The title ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 30, 2017 at the auspicious Chapter House of Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya under the patronage of all the leading Sangha members of Kotte Sri Kalyani Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha. This sedate religious event will be attended by Honorable Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, former President of Sri Lanka and a large number of devotees and well-wishers of Lankarama Buddhist Institute, California, USA, Gangatilaka Viharaya and Vijayasriwardenaramaya.
May the most venerable Aluthnuwara Sumanatissa Nayaka Thero be able to further continue his noble Dhamma service and social welfare drive with the blessing of the noble Triple Gem!
May the Buddha Sasana florish in the world for the benefit of the many!
May all beings be well and happy and healthy!

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Monastery. Then the Blessed One, early in the morning, put on his robes and, carrying his bowl and outer robe, went into Savatthi for alms. And Ven. Rahula, early in the morning, put on his robes and, carrying his bowl and outer robe, went into Savatthi for alms following right behind the Blessed One.(According to the Commentary, Ven. Rahula was 18 years old when this discourse took place.)Then the Blessed One, looking back at Rahula, addressed him:

“yaṃ kiñci, rāhula, rūpaṃ—atītānāgatapaccuppannaṃ ajjhattaṃ vā bahiddhā vā oḷārikaṃ vā sukhumaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā paṇītaṃ vā yaṃ dūre santike vā—sabbaṃ rūpaṃ ‘netaṃ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attā’ti evametaṃ yathābhūtaṃ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabban”ti.

"Rahula, any form whatsoever that is past, future, or present; internal or external; blatant or subtle; common or sublime; far or near: every form is to be seen as it actually is with right discernment as: 'This is not mine. This is not my self. This is not what I am.'"

“Rūpameva nu kho, bhagavā, rūpameva nu kho, sugatā”ti? “Rūpampi, rāhula, vedanāpi, rāhula, saññāpi, rāhula, saṅkhārāpi, rāhula, viññāṇampi, rāhulā”ti.

"Just form, O Blessed One? Just form, O One Well-gone?"
"Form, Rahula, & feeling & perception & fabrications & consciousness."

Atha kho āyasmā rāhulo “ko najja bhagavatā sammukhā ovādena ovadito gāmaṃ piṇḍāya pavisissatī”ti tato paṭinivattitvā aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle nisīdi pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. Addasā kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṃ rāhulaṃ aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle nisinnaṃ pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. Disvāna āyasmantaṃ rāhulaṃ āmantesi: “ānāpānassatiṃ, rāhula, bhāvanaṃ bhāvehi. Ānāpānassati, rāhula, bhāvanā bhāvitā bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā”ti.

Then the thought occurred to Ven. Rahula, "Who, having been exhorted face-to-face by the Blessed One, would go into the town for alms today?" So he turned back and sat down at the foot of a tree, folding his legs crosswise, holding his body erect, & setting mindfulness to the fore.
Ven. Sariputta saw Ven. Rahula sitting at the foot of a tree, his legs folded crosswise, his body held erect, & with mindfulness set to the fore. On seeing him, he said to him, "Rahula, develop the meditation of mindfulness of in-&-out breathing. The meditation of mindfulness of in-&-out breathing, when developed & pursued, is of great fruit, of great benefit."

Atha kho āyasmā rāhulo sāyanhasamayaṃ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā rāhulo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: “kathaṃ bhāvitā nu kho, bhante, ānāpānassati, kathaṃ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā”ti?

Then Ven. Rahula, emerging from his seclusion in the late afternoon, went to the Blessed One and, having bowed down, sat to one side. As he was sitting there he said to him, "How, lord, is mindfulness of in-&-out breathing to be developed & pursued so as to be of great fruit, of great benefit?"

"Rahula, {any form whatsoever that is past, future, or present; internal or external; blatant or subtle; common or sublime; far or near: every form is to be seen as it actually is with right discernment as: 'This is not mine. This is not my self. This is not what I am.' There are these five properties, Rahula. Which five? The earth property, the water property, the fire property, the wind property, & the space property.
"And what is the earth property? The earth property can be either internal or external. What is the internal earth property?}(The preceding passage in braces is missing from the editions on which both The Middle Length Sayings and The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha are based.) Anything internal, within oneself, that's hard, solid, & sustained [by craving]: head hairs, body hairs, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, tendons, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, membranes, spleen, lungs, large intestines, small intestines, contents of the stomach, feces, or anything else internal, within oneself, that's hard, solid, and sustained: This is called the internal earth property. Now both the internal earth property & the external earth property are simply earth property. And that should be seen as it actually is present with right discernment: 'This is not mine, this is not me, this is not my self.' When one sees it thus as it actually is present with right discernment, one becomes disenchanted with the earth property and makes the earth property fade from the mind.
